About managing installations with Installation Manager
Review the different modes that Installation Manager provides
to manage installations and decide which method or combination of
methods to use when installing and managing IBM® software
packages. Choose from wizard mode, silent mode, console mode, command
line.
Installation Manager provides multiple interfaces for installing and maintaining software
packages. You use these interfaces for the Installation Manager package itself as well as other IBM
software packages that are supported by Installation Manager.
- Wizard mode
- For interactive installation, wizard mode is a graphical user interface that allows users to install client and server software. This method requires the user to enter required installation parameters and specify options during the installation process.
- Silent mode
- In silent mode, you start the installation with a response file with information required for installation from the command line or a batch file. Use this mode for software deployments to multiple systems, or to an enterprise. You must install Installation Manager and create a response file before you can manage packages using silent mode.
- Console mode
- In console mode, you run Installation Manager from an interactive, ASCII text-based interface.
Like wizard mode, console mode requires users to enter the required installation parameters and
specify options during the installation process. Use console mode if a graphics display device is
not available or if you want to use the Installation Manager without the graphical user interface.
For example, use console mode for server-side deployments when no graphical user interface is
present, or for running the installation from a remote host.Note: You can use console mode to install and manage the Installation Manager package. You can also install and maintain packages for Rational® ClearCase® version 8.0 and later on Linux and UNIX systems. You cannot maintain Rational ClearQuest® software packages in Installation Manager console mode.
- Command line
- When you cannot use the Installation Manager user interface or a response file for silent installation, use Installation Manager command line (imcl) to manage installations. From a command-line utility, you can run installation scripts that include commands and options for specifying the details of your installation. You can use imcl commands with either the installed version of Installation Manager or the Installation Manager installer.
Note:
- This information center provides general instructions for using different Installation Manager methods to install and maintain Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest packages. Complete documentation for Installation Manager is available in the Installation Manager Information Center.
- For information about the Installation Manager version level required to install Rational ClearCase, see the Rational ClearQuest System Requirements information on the IBM Support web site.
